Part 4. Episode 2, Outsider Academic

Went out in Melbourne with my boss Tom Boyle to give a couple of papers at  ASCILITE 2001. Tom is the closest thing I ever had to a mentor. I took the opportunity to visit the Twelve Apostles, a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of Port Campbell National Park, by the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. This is a photo of a photo!

ED-MEDIA 2001 - Tampere, Finland, June 25-30, 2001. There to present 2 papers. Me, unknown, Peter, unknown, Debbie

Following the presentation of a couple of papers in Auckland (2002), I got the family over and we travelled around New Zealand in a camper van, awesome place. This was our first digital camera and so I am afraid the picture quality (below) is a bit low.

In 2004 I visited Lugano, Switzerland (below), which is beautiful and Italian speaking. Our research team were attending ED-MEDIA. Had my name on 4 papers! One was presented by my PhD student Dejan Ljubojevic, who went on to gain his PhD. In the London Metropolitan University days I went on a lot of trips with a mate Peter Oriogun, who I guided (with Tom's help) to a PhD through publication. RIP Peter, I miss you.

My trip to Banff, Canada, in 2006 is shown below. I was out there to give a paper at the mLearn conference. On a day off some of us hired a car and headed out into the wilds. I was driving through the snow when we sighted the bear. Canada is a beautiful place. Walked to some amazing rock formations (Hoodoos, photo 3rd below) on a path with Claire Bradley and Richard; on the way back Richard Haynes and I went off piste and had a bit of an adventure. Loved it. Banff Hoodoos are composed of sedimentary rock covered by harder rock that is more difficult to erode. Once the softer sediment erodes, e.g. by wind, you get a rock needle, or a tower like natural obstacle. Not a lota people know that ...

Also in 2006 I visited the Dome Of The Rock, Jerusalem, Israel (below) and the the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. I was on a British Council sponsored trip to the Palestine Territories with ALT and the ubiquitous Seb Schmoller. ALT is the Association for Learning Technology, I was Chair/President of the Association for Learning Technology (2004-06) and Chair of ALT’s Research Committee (2010-12). On the 11th - 13th June 2006, at invitation of British Council, myself and Seb went on a fact-finding trip to Palestine Territories. The aim was to set up study exchanges and meet heads of universities.

I had been invited to give a talk at Ed-Media 2007: Generating New Learning Contexts: Novel Forms of Reuse and Learning on the Move. In C. Montgomerie & J. Seale (Eds.), Proceedings of World Conference on Educational Multimedia, Hypermedia and Telecommunications 2007 (pp. 2766-2779). Chesapeake, VA: AACE.

Whilst at a project meeting, myself and a colleague Andrew Ravenscroft got stranded by the 2010 eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull (lots of planes were grounded, including ours). We spent the day looking around Vienna then got the last train off the continental Europe back to blighty! Before heading home we visited 'The Third Man' filming location where Harry Lime made the “cuckoo clock” speech on the ferris wheel: Riesenrad, Prater, Vienna, Austria (below).

Also in 2010 went to Ohrid, Macedonia (above and below), organised by Technology Enhanced Learning Summer School  (telss) people. I gave a paper and generally supported PhD students from across Europe.
