Scarborough was a favorite destination for family holidays. On this trip I stayed in the Grand hotel in Scarborough, mainly because I got a cheap deal! Probably was Grand once. Sunday night is bingo, which was popular with some of my Aunts. I gave it a miss. On the way up in the lift I get chatting to a couple. He asks where I am from? "Leeds, although I don't sound like it. I used to come here on family holidays. Where are you guys from?" I reply. "Doncaster. I love it here me" he says, with real enthusiasm.
In the 1970s Dad used to pay his yearly membership to the Working Men's Club in Swillington (near Leeds) so that my brother and I could go on the annual trip to Scarborough and get chased by skin-heads! On the way out in the hire bus we always got 50 old pence in a brown envelope, a packet of crisps and a bottle of pop. According to Mum, when we moved backed to Yorkshire in 1967s we splashed out and stayed in a flash hotel called The Crescent. Some of the old photos below are from around this time.
Out at 5am to capture sunrise over Scarborough lighthouse. As an early riser it is easy for me to get out and about at dawn. As I point out in earlier blogs I love the light and mood early in the day; this is why there is a blog Category of "Early morning light" (see bottom right-hand side on 'John's Blog' page). I like how the lantern room in Scarborough lighthouse is illuminated by the sun. The seagulls calls were many and amazing (see short video below). I do like the elegant woman I came across on Monday morning walking her dog in silk PJs! Her dog can't wait to get back in though
