We learnt about Spurn at School in Leeds and Bradford. On my first trip for my photo stories blog, I planned to visit Withernsea, Tunstall, Skipsea and Bridlington. As Spurn was on the way, and had a light house, I decided to visit here first. I am glad I did.
Spurn keeps changing shape and we learnt about it in Geography lessons. Material is washed down the coast by a process called longshore drift and accumulates to form the long, narrow embankment making Spurn, which is essentially a sand tidal island. The southernmost tip is known as Spurn Head or Spurn Point and is the home to an RNLI lifeboat station and two disused lighthouses. East Yorkshire once expanded further into the North Sea, but over the centuries the land and over 30 villages have been lost to the waves (see map in post "The road that disappeared"). For example, Ravenser Odd village was built upon a sandbank at the mouth of the estuary, close to the Spurn Point, but is now covered by the waves of the North Sea. Ravenser Odd is believed to have been founded in the mid-1200s, it’s unusual name stems from the Norse Hrafn’s Eyr, or raven’s tongue. Spurn is a wild place and I will revisit.
Comment via email July 2022 on a first draft of this diary/blog/newsletter:
I don’t know what spurred you to make this trip now and don’t wish to pry. That said, I suspect your brother was in your thoughts and I hope those thoughts were mostly happy ones ... I love lighthouses; they were amongst some of my favourite NT visits (see link below). If you ever get the change, do visit Souter (even further north): https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/features/lighthouses-in-our-care
I will return to my sadly departed younger Brother Ian when I make the trip to Filey. I have avoided Filey so far, but over recent years it has been the source of much family joy. I think of Ian every day. He knew more about wildlife and birds than I've had hot dinners. When I visit Mum I still expect to see his face at her window, waiting to get in and tell us like it is. He loved places like Sprun Point. And yes Paul, I will definitely visit Souter and create new photo stories.
