Part 1 - Old photos and stories from the coastal edge (1958-1976) - I lived in 10 places up to the age of 14
This is my photo stories blog. In Part 1 I'm checking out stories about people and places (on the coast) from my past. I then revisit these places and write new stories. So, this involves getting hold of old photos and stories from my past (of visits to the coastal edge of the UK), and then connecting them to new photos and stories of these places. The research around new stories sometimes triggers a visit to somewhere new to me. Hence the name of this blog: Connections with the Edge. So for example, the above old, grainy picture is of Mum, Dad, Brother, Sister and me on the beach at Scarborough, Summer 1967. It triggered the blog post "Scarborough, Sunday night is bingo, 7th August". But more happens. For example, a friend posted on Facebook about my 1st trip, this led to research into villages lost to erosion; see blog post "Tunstall, The road that disappeared, 21st July (5 am)"; this in turn led to a visit to Fraisthorpe Beach (which was new to me). However, when I talked to Mum on the phone and mentioned Fraisthorpe, she reminded me that Dad and her used to visit there a lot. I am what we researchers call a participant observer, exploring narrative in a lightweight Ethnographic frame. Well, that was the methodological explanation. Below I get a little more poetic.
Memories of my past erode like the coastline of my native Yorkshire. I talk to Mum to jog recollection of family trips to the edge of the county. I recall school Geography field trips to see the truncated dome at Robin Hoods Bay and the Brig at Filey. I remember reading about that hotel outside Scarborough that fell over the cliff! Thoughts travel back as I look at old pictures of my Father, Mother, Sister, Brother, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins on beaches. Long Covid and lockdown had pushed me into thinking about my connections. Then Max Miechowski's work grabs my attention: 'Life on the edge: Land loss on England’s east coast', a photo essay. I decide to investigate people and places from my past. How are you doing East Yorkshire? What stories do my family, friends and the people I meet have to tell about the edge? What of other coastal spots that I visited?
